I ALWAYS loved to color as a child. Sea Green and Salmon were my favorite colors. I didn't know I had any artistic ability until high school when I stayed up all night sketching things out of the phone book yellow pages. The next day I sketched a sleeping cocker spaniel. I was amazed how well they looked. However, I was not one of those people who are blessed with a natural ability so I did not try to pursue it any further.
In 1978 I took drafting in college, thinking this would be the closest I would get to art and be able to make a living. I worked as a drafter and Technical designer for 25 years. I worked at Boeing for 23 years and retired at the end of 2005. Now I try to paint as much as I can. Even though you're retired there is still the day-to-day things that need to be done.
All of my artistic ability has been self-taught through books, PBS Paint shows, DVD and practice. Yes, practice does make perfect. I found a book on doing pet portraits and my daughter, Sonia had a wonderful picture of her dog Finster. That has started my path of pet portraits. Our beloved pets are with us for such a short time, I feel this is a way to capture them forever.
